April 9, 2012 — Diamond Pet Foods has recalled all size bags of its Diamond Naturals Lamb Meal & Rice dog food.

The product may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria, a common cause of food poisoning.

Pets with salmonella may have decreased appetite and gut pain. If untreated, the pet may become slow moving and sleepy, have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, run a fever, and vomit.

Even if a pet with salmonella has no symptoms, the animal can transmit the infection to humans or to other animals.

People who handle salmonella-contaminated dry dog food can become infected. Symptoms of salmonella include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. People with severe diarrhea may need to be hospitalized. Rare cases of severe salmonella can be fatal.

The contaminated products were distributed in 12 states, but may have been distributed to other states through pet food networks. The states in which the products originally were distributed are Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
